All About Chopping Boards
This month we’re focusing on one of our most resourceful products and why we love them
One thing that became apparent when we first started this business was the sheer amount of timber offcuts. No matter how precise our measurements were or how carefully we selected our timber lengths, we were always left with offcuts. As the pile started to grow so did the endless brainstorming of how we could use said offcuts. Like most of our products, the idea to make chopping boards came about because I wanted one of my own.
I was over using flimsy plastic chopping boards and fed up with cheap, mass produced “timber” boards that would warp, split and eventually fall apart. I took my idea to the boss (Scott) and before I knew it, I had my very own solid timber chopping board made solely from leftovers destined to sit around and gather dust. The best part? Scott whipped it up in the small window of downtime that he had between customer orders. I was in love and knew right away that we had to market these to our following.
The centerpiece of my kitchen
Once we made our first chopping board all I could see when I looked at the offcuts in the shed was the sheer potential. Chopping boards, cheese boards, table centerpieces, the list went on. Each one that we have made has been so different from the last and no two will ever be the same. Our chopping boards may be made from offcuts but that doesn’t mean that the quality is any less because we are still using quality product and each piece of timber is carefully selected to ensure a stunning end product.
One of the standouts for me was a matching chopping board and charcuterie board set with a feature inlay detail that we made for my Sister. We added a hole and leather strap to the charcuterie board to give the option of hanging it on the wall like the piece of art that it is. They are almost too beautiful to use but it would be such a waste not to. I’d be using every excuse possible to have a cheese board if this was mine. Wouldn’t you?
A stunning set
Having the ability to make chopping boards opens the door to so much potential and who says they are just for food prep and serving? A little while back we were approached by a well known, local, cheese shop looking to have some mini boards made up. The idea was to have a small board for single serves of cheese for tasting. When we saw how cute they turned out we couldn’t help but make a few more for our own stock and market them in a hundred different ways. Imagine how adorable this would look with a small potted plant on it with a few bunched together. Maybe a place to display your jewellery when its not being worn or a single serve dessert plate to wow guests at your next dinner party. Some people may only see a cheese board but I see so much more.
